APC extends mandate of interim committees in Ekiti, Osun

The All Progressives Congress (APC), at its eighth national convention on Friday, approved a six-month extension of the tenure of the party’s Provisional Committee leaders in Ekiti and Osun states.

The decision, ratified by the National Convention, the party’s supreme body, was to ensure administrative continuity and stability ahead of upcoming government cycles in the affected states.

Moving the motion for the extension, Senator Barau Jibrin, representing Kano North, said the mandate of the current temporary committees at the district, local government and state levels would expire at the end of March 2026.

He noted, however, that impending political developments make the current period impractical for holding new congresses.

“It is appropriate, in the overall interest of the party, to extend the mandate of the aforementioned provisional committees to allow for proper coordination, consolidation and preparation for holding the congresses,” Jibrin said.

The motion seconded by Senate leader Opeyemi Bamidele was subsequently approved by delegates to the convention.

Likewise, the convention also saw the formal dissolution of the National Working Committee (NWC) to pave the way for the election of new national officials.

The dissolution motion was moved by the National Legal Adviser, Abdulkarim Kana, who cited Article 13.1 of the party constitution, and seconded by the Deputy National Secretary, Prof. Abdulkarim Oluopolekana.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas also moved a motion for the adoption of consensus as the main electoral mode for the emergence of new national officials.

“The adoption of a defined electoral modality will guide the proceedings and ensure that the process reflects the collective will of the party,” Abbas said.

The motion was seconded by the Governor of Kaduna State and Vice President of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), Senator Uba Sani.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio moved the motion for formal adoption and ratification of the neighborhood, local government, state and zonal government conferences already conducted across the federation.

Akpabio said the trials were undertaken in substantial compliance with the electoral law and party guidelines, effectively strengthening the basic structure of the APC.

The motion was seconded by the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo.

All motions were approved unanimously by the delegates at the national congress.
