APC extends term of office of Ekiti and Osun caretaker committees

The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday approved a six-month term extension for the party’s Executive Caretaker Committees in Ekiti and Osun States.

The decision, ratified by the National Convention Committee—the party’s highest body, aims to ensure administrative continuity and stability ahead of the upcoming gubernatorial cycle in the affected states.

Moving the extension motion, Senator representing Kano North, Barau Jibrin, said the term of the current interim committees at the ward, local government and state levels would end at the end of March.

However, he noted that impending political developments made the current period unlikely to convene a new congress.

“It is wise in the interests of the party as a whole to extend the tenure of the interim committee to allow for proper coordination, consolidation and preparation for the conduct of the congress,” Jibrin said.

The motion supported by the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele was later approved by the delegates to the convention.

Likewise, the convention also saw the official dissolution of the National Working Committee (NWC) to pave the way for the election of new national officers.

This proposal for dissolution was moved by the National Legal Advisor, Abdulkarim Kana, who quoted Article 13.1 of the party’s Constitution, and was supported by the Deputy National Secretary, Prof. Abdulkarim Oluopolekana.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, also moved a motion to adopt consensus as the primary method of selection for the emergence of new national officials.

“The implementation of the prescribed electoral method will guide the electoral process and ensure that the process reflects the collective will of the party,” Abbas said.
