APC vows to defend votes in Kano local government elections, demands free and fair process

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has vowed to protect its votes in the upcoming local government elections, scheduled for October 24, 2024.

Abdullahi Abbas, the head of state, made this statement in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Thursday.

According to Abbas, the party is taking all necessary steps to ensure maximum participation of its supporters in the elections. “We are doing everything humanly possible to ensure that our numerous supporters participate in the elections,” he said. The APC is mobilizing its supporters to participate in the elections, prioritizing the protection of voting rights and a peaceful process.

The party plans to hold primary elections soon to select candidates for 44 local government areas. Abbas stressed the importance of a free, fair and credible election process and called on state election commissions to provide a supportive environment for all participating parties.

Abbas assured that his party has started door-to-door sensitization to its supporters to encourage mass participation in the October 24 general elections. He also warned party supporters against violence before, during and after the elections, stressing that the APC will not tolerate intimidation.

“Kano state remains a stronghold of the APC, and we want to maintain our advantage,” Abbas said. “We urge the commission to ensure the integrity of the electoral process, which is critical to the development of Nigeria’s democracy.”

The development follows the APC’s defeat in the 2023 Kano state gubernatorial election, where Abba Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) emerged victorious. The upcoming local government elections will be a crucial test of the APC’s efforts to maintain its influence in the state.
