Asup accused the neglect of the Nigerian government, threatening attacks

Polytechnic Academic Staff Union (ASUP), Zone C (Southwest), on Wednesday expressed concern over unfinished issues that affect the education of polytechnics and the welfare of staff in this country.

The union also condemned the federal government rejection to respect the agreement signed by both parties.

Asup coordinator in the zone, Mr. Masopa Nurudeen, raised concerns at a press conference at the Gateway Polytechnic (ICT) in Saapade, the state of Ogun.

He described the situation as unacceptable.

The coordinator highlighted 13 main complaints of trade unions, including non-payment lecturer allowances, stopped promotions, and poor infrastructure funding.

He also registered the failure to implement the reforms contained in the road map approved by the Ministry of Education.

According to him, ASUP members did not want to continue working in such conditions.

He said: “The core of the demands is a special academic allowance that has not been completed, the product of the 2010 ASUP/FGN Agreement. Continuity of payment cannot be guaranteed without proper documentation of the relevant institutions.”

He also expressed dissatisfaction that the federal government allowed outsourcing accreditation personnel.

Nurudeen believes that the development is compromising quality assurance, raised corruption, and impose unnecessary financial burdens on institutions.

“Another major concern is the failure to pay arrears on a 12 -month consequence salary adjustment.

“We are not happy with the situation. Many staff have been revoked unfairly despite the existing government statements.

“We both condemn the delay in releasing the 2023 needs assessment intervention fund. Poor facilities remain a stumbling block for learning and research; However, funds for compensation remain locked.

“Our members also frowned to implement the 2019 Federal Polytechnic Law in all State-Owned Polytechnics. This makes staff vulnerable to forced retirement and other administrative injustices in several states,” he said.

The coordinator warns that the failure to solve the problem will force the Uni to start a national attack.
