ASUU demands reinstatement of 5 LASU lecturers

The Academic Employees Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos Zone, on Tuesday demanded the unconditional reinstatement of five sacked union members at the Lagos State University (LASU).

ASUU coordinator in the zone, Prof. Adelaja Odukoya, made the call at a press conference organised by the union in Lagos.

The union after the press conference held a peaceful demonstration around the Ojo LASU Campus.

ASUU branches from various universities were also present at the rally.

These universities include the University of Lagos, Kwara State University, University of Ilorin and Tai-Solarin University of Education.

The union members carried placards that read: “Dear Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Dr. Tony Dansu on Education is Very Precious, Free It, Restore Him and Others and Let Justice Prevail.”

Other inscriptions read: “LASU is a Beneficiary of ASUU’s Struggle,” and “Call Back Our Staff.”

Odukoya urged the state government to lift the embargo imposed on the implementation of the LASU Governing Council decision on the matter.

He said: “The governor should also release, without further delay, the report of the visiting panel, in the interest of the public good.

“Lagosians whose taxes are used to fund this exercise should know the outcome and what the government will do about its recommendations.

“This is an honorable and healthy path to restore LASU to a pro-labour university community in Nigeria and beyond.”

The coordinator revealed that five ASUU executive members in LASU were dismissed by the previous board from September 2017 to 2019.

He added: “The official of this union is Dr. Isaac Oyewumi (Chairman), Dr. Adebowale Adeyemi-Suenu (Deputy Chair), Dr. Tony Dansu (Secretary), Dr. Adeolu Oyekan (Assistant Secretary), and Dr. Oluwakemi Aboderin-Shonibare (Treasurer).

“Prior to their dismissal in 2018, they approached the court to challenge their trial by the university.

“The court ruled that, based on the Freedom of Information Act and other relevant laws cited, the university authorities did not have the authority to prosecute the union officials in the case.

“Despite this court ruling, the university continued with the trial and eventually dismissed the ASUU-LASU leaders.

“We have decided that all members of our union are prohibited from having any relationship with LASU or its staff members until further notice.”
