Asuu demands the implementation of the 2009 agreement, warning the strike

The University Academic Staff Union (ASUU), Kano Zone, on Thursday urged the Federal Government to accelerate the action of re -negotiating the 2009 agreement signed by both parties.

Zonal Asuu Coordinator, Mr. Abdulkadir Muhammad, made a call at a briefing news in Kano.

He registered the problem of concern to enter the 2009 agreement re -negotiations; Sustainable Funding State University, Victimization of Asuu members in Lasu, and Prince Abubakar Audu University.

Others are non-payment of salary arrears 25/35 percent, promotional arrears that have not been paid for more than four years, and rejection to send third party reductions.

Muhammad said that the union demanded an immediate signing and implementation of the Committee’s report led by Yayale Ahmed to prevent the towering industrial crisis at the State University.

He said the rejection of the government to review salaries and improve the working conditions of lecturers for more than 16 years had been poor, demoralizing, and demonstrating lecturers throughout the country.

“The lecturers have run out of patience, and clearly, we cannot guarantee the harmony of industry at our state university.

“We ask our students, parents, civil society organizations, the media, and other Nigerians who are well intentions to join hands with Asuu to save the Nigerian State University from the destruction that will soon occur,” Asuu Coordinator stated.

Muhammad also expressed concern over the deterioration of insecurity, high cost of living, increasing poverty, and widening the inequality of wealth in the country.

He said Nigerians were kidnapped, disabled, and killed almost every day by bandits, kidnappers, and rebels, leaving thousands of internal refugees.

“Many people and property of innocent citizens have been damaged and destroyed by criminal elements.

“We remind the government at all levels of their constitutional responsibility to protect the life and property of citizens,” Muhammad concluded.

Asuu members throughout the country protested for a week to express their displeasure over the failure of the federal government to implement the agreement.

They also condemned the poor state of the State University and demanded direct responses from the government of their demands.
