Atbu Sacks Senior Lecturer for Alleged Sexual Harassment of Married Students

A senior lecturer with Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Dr. Usman Aliyu, has been fired by the government council on charges of sexually harassing a married postgraduate student, Ny. Kamila Aliyu.

In the dismissal letter issued in the official bulletin of the University, ATBU HERARD, Vol. 39 No. 5, April 22, after the 96th Regular Council meeting held on April 11, the council said Dr. Aliyu’s sack was approved based on the findings of the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee who concluded that the lecturer was guilty of violations.

The institution said the council’s actions were based on Chapter 3, Item F, I (O) from the condition of senior university service staff.

The dismissal letter signed by the Deputy Registrar of Senior, Establishment of Senior Staff, Alhaji Abdullahi Suleiman, reads:

“Following the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee report found you guil to the indecent relationship involving university students, Mrs. Kamila Rufai Aliyu from the Department of Chemical Engineering, the Faculty of Engineering and Engineering, the council then approved your dismissal from university services with direct effects.”

The dismissal letter also instructed Dr. Aliyu to restore all university property.

“You are directed to hand over all the university property that you have to the head of your department and identification card to the head of the University Security Officer,” said the instructions.

According to reports, the victim had made a petition last year, accusing Dr. Aliyu of committing sexual harassment and accusing that he threatened his academic progress if he did not meet his demands.

Responding to the accusation, Dr. Aliyu filed a defamation suit against students, departments and universities but apart from the lawsuit, the university continued with an internal investigation that found him guilty and recommended his dismissal.
