Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has not declared the intention to run for president in 2027, contrary to speculation triggered by viral videos circulating on social media.
Atiku media advisor, Paul Ibe, issued a strong clarification on Friday, which stated that the video was distributed widely – where the former vice president was heard saying he would make a “official announcement” about his political plan – not recently.
According to Ibe, the recording was being “used for damage” and was initially recorded in a buildup for the preliminary election of the 2022 Democratic Party President.
“The old video of Atiku is used for crime. Yes, this is a former Vice President of Nigeria (1999-2007), Atiku Abubakar, spoke to journalists ahead of the President of PDP 2023,” Ibe said.

He explained that Atiku’s confidence in the clip was typical of a candidate who was preparing for a big election.
“He sounds confident because that’s what is expected of a man who has worked hard and is optimistic that victory in the preliminary selection of the 2023 election,” Ibe said.
Video, which got an attraction on X (previously Twitter), was interpreted by many people as a clue about the possibility of returning Atiku to the presidential election in 2027. But Ibe stressed that such claims are baseless.
“It is important to provide the context of this video to eliminate damage makers from the opportunity to misinterpret what is meant by this video,” he added.
He urged the public to ignore the narration that is misleading and aware of politically wrong information.
