Former vice -president Atiku Abubakar has reported his intention to contest the presidency again, since the discussions intensify on who will fly the flag of the emerging coalition of the opposition in view of the general elections of 2027.
Atiku, who lost with President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 and with President Bola Tinubu in 2023, gave the suggestion while receiving a delegation led by the former minister Idris Abdullahi. In a video shared on his X (previously Twitter), he sentenced corruption and undertook to lead a government of integrity.
“We will definitely face anyone involved in theft or corruption.
“Enough is enough! While other nations are progressing, the growth of Nigeria is suffocated by some selfish individuals,” said Atiku.
He stressed that the provisional leadership of the coalition was carefully selected to reflect honesty and integrity, indicating that the type of leadership that the Nigerians can expect if it takes the office.
In a declaration that accompanies the video, Atiku complained of the Nigerian’s continuous suffering despite the abundant resources of the country, attributing it to the poor governance. He promised that the coalition, operating under the African democratic congress (ADC), would have worked to improve citizens’ lives.
This happens after the relationships that Atiku and other opposition figures had revealed the ADC as a political platform to challenge the offer of re -election of President Tinubu in 2027.
As the speculations continue on who will emerge as a candidate for the presidency of the coalition, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, vice-president of 2023 of the Labor Party 2023, declared during an interview on Arise TV that the choice of the Flagbearer remains the greatest challenge of the coalition.
He compared the coalition with the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013, observing that the APC had a clear non -stick in Muhammadu Buhari long before its primaries. On the contrary, Baba-Ahmed warned that the coalition led by the Adc risks a disordered primary due to the absence of a clear candidate for consent.
“There are structural doubts in the coalition. Buhari was the clear choice from the beginning of the APC. In this case, there is no candidate with a distant one. It will be a narrow race that could lead to disputes,” he said.
He also expressed strong opinions on the role of Peter Obi, candidate for the presidency of the 2023 Labor Party, claiming that Obi should not accept a Slot Vice President in 2027.
“I was made up as vice -president in 2023, but I think Obi should not return as a running companion after obtaining over 10 million contested votes. The position of the vice -president is too small for him,” he said.
Meanwhile, the air and aerospace development minister, Festus Keyamo, has rejected the coalition as a political tool for the ambition of Atiku. In a post on social media, he described the alliance as “Atiku show”, suggesting that Obi is used for its support base without any real plan to deliver the presidential ticket to it.
“This is only the faction of Atiku of the PDP in search of the 2027 ticket. They want the votes of Obi but will not give him the ticket. That’s why David Mark is the provisional president. If Obi does not get the ticket, the coalition will lose his supporters. It’s so simple,” Keyam said.
He questioned the logic of making Obi a racing partner in Atiku, underlining that Obi won two regions-South-East and South-South-Nel 2023, while Atiku ensured only in the north-east.
