“Attacks on Democratic Principles,” SDP condemned the prohibition of demonstrations in Kogi

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kogi has condemned the prohibition on political demonstrations in the state.

The state government on Monday prohibits all forms of demonstrations and security convoys to prevent security violations in the state.

But in a statement issued on Tuesday in Lokoja, the Chairperson of SDP in the state, Mr. Ahmed Attah, described the prohibition as an attack on democratic principles and bright efforts to silence the sound of opposition.

Attah urged Governor Ahmed Ododo to learn from the past and avoid the repetition of old and dangerous practices that had hampered the progress of the country.

He said: “The party views this action as an effort to suppress freedom of association and movement enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Nigerian Republic of 1999.”

Attah insisted that the state did not fight and urged the government to focus on development instead of being involved in political maneuvers.

He warned that Kogi could not return to the dark days of oppression, especially against opposition.
