Australian woman imprisoned for poisoning of 3 in -laws with mushrooms

An Australian woman was sentenced to prison for the murder of three elderly relatives of her stranger husband with a meal containing poisonous mushrooms.

The woman, Erin Patterson, was sentenced to a minimum of 33 years in prison on Monday 8 September 2025, in one of the longest terms ever given to a woman in the country.

The judge chair, judge Christopher Beale, said that Patterson did not show any pity for his in -laws after serving individual portions of Wellington beef intertwined with mushrooms of the death cap.

Patterson was stated in July that he killed his mother -in -law, Gail Patterson, father -in -law, Donald Patterson, and Gail’s sister, Heather Wilkinson, in one case that was followed globally and nicknamed the Mushrooms of Leongatha mushrooms.

A jury also considered the 50-year-old woman guilty of the murder attempt by Ian Wilkinson, Heather’s husband, who survived the 2023 meal at Patterson’s house in Leongagatha, a city of about 6,000 people, about 135 km (84 miles) south-east of Melbourne.

Judge Beale said that the substantial planning of the murders and the lack of remorse by Patterson has meant that his condemnation should be long.

“The devastating impact of your crimes is not limited to your direct victims. Your crimes have damaged many people,” said the judge at the conviction hearing at the Victoria Supreme Court in Melbourne.

“Not only did you cut three lives and caused lasting damage to Ian Wilkinson’s health, thus devastating the extensive families of patterson and Wilkinson, but you have inflicted an unspeakable suffering to your children, who have robbed their beloved grandparents.”

Ian Wilkinson thanked the police and public ministries who brought patternson to justice, as well as medical teams who edited him and the other victims.

“We are grateful that when things go badly, there are good people, services and systems available to help us recover,” he told Reuters off the pitch.
