Badminton star Opeyori advances in her Olympic preparation

The Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) has organized a special dinner to send off the country’s number one badminton star, Anuoluwapo Opeyori, who will intensify his training in Italy ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Opeyori, a four-time African Championship winner and two-time African Games champion, secured a place at the Paris Games last month, becoming the first Nigerian badminton player to qualify for two consecutive Olympic Games after performing in Tokyo 2020.

The President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih, described the occasion as historic.

“Badminton history was made after Anuoluwapo Opeyori secured a place at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games,” Orbih said.

“I am overjoyed because Anu is the first Nigerian badminton player to participate in the men’s singles category at the Olympics and also the first Nigerian badminton player to attend two Olympic Games in a row.”

Speaking to the media after the event, Orbih outlined the federation’s program for Opeyori, which he said would begin with a three-week training tour of Italy this week.

He added: “We call this program ‘Send’ because we intend to have him travel to Italy next week (this week) for a training camp of about three weeks.

“After that, the ministry will open its training camp in Germany on July 1, there he will join the Nigerian team.”

“We also want him to play the Mauritius International and another championship. After training camp you need to go to the field and put into practice the skills you learned on the field. After that he will go directly to the Olympic Games.”
