Bayer Leverkusen’s Managing Director, Simon Rofles has confirmed the club’s willingness to allow Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella to join the Nigerian squad for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Rofles emphasized that the club understands the significance of international competitions and won’t impede the players’ national duties.
Despite the common challenge faced by top European clubs in releasing players during the middle of a busy season, Leverkusen, currently leading the Bundesliga, faces a substantial impact.
The club is set to be without key players such as Odilon Kossounou (Ivory Coast), Edmond Tapsoba (Burkina Faso), and Amine Adli (Morocco) due to their respective national team commitments.
Earlier, Die Werkself’s Chief Executive Officer, Fernando Carro, expressed dissatisfaction with the timing of the competition and even hinted at potential legal action to prevent Boniface and Tella from participating.
However, Rofles has categorically denied Carro’s assertions, reassuring that the club will not obstruct the players’ involvement in the prestigious African tournament.
“If they are called up, they will go,” Rolfes said to Kicker about the five Bayer Leverkusen players in line to represent their respective countries at the AFCON.“He concluded.
Boniface is one of the top stars in the Bundelisga this season with eight goals and seven assists.
