One of Peter Rufai’s daughters, trust, explained why his father’s disease was kept private, saying that he reflected his strong love for a peaceful life.
Rufai, a member of the victorious AFCON Super Eagles team from 1994, died on July 3.
Rufai was honored together with three other Nigerian sports legends during a “night of tributes” organized by Segun Odegbami and sponsored by the president of Air Peace, Allen Onyema.
The event, held at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs on the island of Victoria, aroused significant characters from the nation sports community.
Many Nigerians, unaware of Rufai’s disease, were shocked by his sudden death. Trust clarified that his father had wanted complete privacy.
“For those who felt wounded by the secret, I apologize. My father loved privacy. He really enjoyed a quiet and reserved life.
“He did not want advertising on his condition. He would prefer to transmit peacefully rather than remain under the eyes of the public because of the disease.
“Honestly, he evaluated his dignity. He never sought public sympathy. Even in difficulties, he preferred to remain silent and composed.
“My father never boasted or looked for attention. His sense of self -respect was profound. I see that stretch reflected in myself,” Fidust said.
Speaking of Rufai’s patriotism, confidence described him as an altruistic Nigerian who gave everything to serve his country.
“When they describe someone exceptional, words are often not up to par. The Nigerians will judge him based on what they feel they have earned.
“For me, describing my father goes beyond words. He was a paternal figure not only for us but for many others.
“He has often reminded us that his duty extended beyond the family. He felt responsible for the least privileged of us.
“I cannot give a value to how Nigeria can honor it. Its dedication to the country was beyond compensation,” he said.
Trust also revealed that the plans for the burial of Rufai are underway and would have been announced soon.
“Some of us have followed his sporting steps. My brothers are also involved. Over time, others may arrive.
“My father’s silent nature runs in us. We prefer to keep things discreet. They will be more gradually revealed.
“His burial date will soon be made public,” he said.
