China has greatly condemned the restrictions on the new visa of the United States who targeted Chinese students, mentioning the move by Trump’s “Political and Discriminatory” administration because the tension between the two countries continued to increase.
On Wednesday, the US announced plans to “aggressively” revoke visas to Chinese students and apply a tighter visa check for future applications from China and Hong Kong.
The policy shift, launched by the Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has sent waves of surprises through American universities that are very dependent on the income of international students.
China responded with sharp criticism on Thursday, when a spokesman for Foreign Ministry Mao Ning condemned the decision, said Beijing had proposed a formal protest with Washington.
Disappearing the US to “unreasonable” to cancel the visa of Chinese students, Mao said: “China urges the United States to protect the rights and interests of international students, including those from China.”
The US decision is part of a broader encouragement by Trump’s administration to suppress international students, especially those that are considered related to the sensitive field or the interests of the Chinese government.
Rubio, defending the latest administrative actions, stated: “We will aggressively revoke visas for Chinese students, including those who have connections to the Chinese Communist Party or study in the critical field. We will also revise the visa criteria to increase the supervision of all visa applications in the future of the People’s Republic of China and Hong Kong.”
These steps have triggered uncertainty among students from other countries as well. A PhD student from Taiwan, who will study in California, expressed concern about the process postponed by visa freezing.
“I understand the process may be delayed but there are still some time before the semester begins in mid -August,” said a 27 -year -old student who did not want to be identified. “All I can do now is waiting and hoping for the best.”

In the 2023-24 academic year, China sent 277,398 students to the US, although India has now followed for the first time in a few years, according to data from the Institute of International Education.
This step also came in the midst of deeper disputes between Trump and the Universities of Big US University. Harvard University, in particular, has faced intense supervision from the administration of student acceptance and protest practices.
Trump’s government has tried to end permission for all international students in Harvard, an institution that has pushed back to the President’s policy.
The tension has peaked ahead of the Harvard graduation ceremony, with the judge while stopping administrative orders to forbid foreign students while waiting for a court hearing.
The White House has disarmed federal research funds from Harvard and other leading universities, accusing them of promoting liberal ideology that is contrary to American values.
Press Secretary of the White House Karoline Leavitt explains administrative attitudes: “The President is more interested in giving taxpayers to schools and programs and public schools where they promote American values, but most importantly, educating the next generation based on the skills we need in our economy and our community.”
Some Harvard students are afraid that this policy will make American universities less attractive to international scholars.
“I don’t know if I will pursue a PhD title here. Six years is a long time,” said Jack, a medical history student from England who graduated this week and only gave a first name.
Harvard has launched a broad legal challenge to fight administrative efforts.
Meanwhile, Rubio has intensified his encouragement, even when China criticized his decision to suspend visa promises throughout the world. The cable signed by Rubio earlier this week ordered the Embassy and Consulate to stop “every additional student or visa exchange … the capacity of the gathering to further guidelines is issued” while increasing the supervision of the applicant’s social media.
The broader implication of visa crush has not yet emerged, but observers warn that it can harm not only Chinese students but also American reputation as the main goal for global talent.
