Senate on Wednesday called for the formation of a military base in the Hong Regional Government in Adamawa to overcome the rise of Boko Haram activities in the area and other northeast countries.
The resolution follows the adoption of a motion sponsored by the Aminu Abbas senator and sponsored together by all senators from northeast during the plenary in Abuja.
Although the upper legislative room praised the brilliant performance of law enforcement agents, they urged the federal government to establish a military base in the area to strengthen the existing personnel from the Nigerian Army and other sister security agents.
The Senate also directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide materials to eliminate the impact of attacks on the affected community in the area.
In his presentation, Abbas noted that as a result of repeated attacks by Boko Haram in several communities in Hong Lga, thousands of innocent people had become homeless with their property destroyed.
He said the revival of the Boko Haram activities which was cut across the northeast state of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa.
Members of parliament expressed concern that unfavorable activities of the group had influenced regional economic activities, zones and countries in general.
“People in the affected area no longer go to agriculture or start trading activities,” he said.
On his party, the head of the whip senate, Mohammed Monguno, praised the Nigerian military for showing determination and commitment in the war against the Boko Haram rebellion.
He said: “I also praised the political will and support given to the Nigerian military by the Tinubu Bola President in their mandate release.”
In his remarks, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, called for more vigilance by Nigeria.
“There is a need for sustainable vigilance because, as you say, every time the fight subsides and they think that the military has relaxed, they will catch them unconsciously with a series of attacks.
“Our border is very porous. So, whenever they escape from Nigeria because some of them are not from Nigeria, they still find their way to our community and attack our people,” he said.
