Boniface fires home as Bayern Leverkusen begin title defence on winning streak

Super Eagles and Bayer 04 Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface failed to score while playing 82 minutes in Bayern Leverkusen’s 3-2 win over Borussia Mochengladbach in the opening match of the 2024/2025 Bundesliga season on Friday, Sports247 reports.

Boniface led the attacking line, taking a total of five shots in the game, but they all counted for nothing as the champions began their title defence on a winning note in the five-goal thriller that saw Die Werkself pick up 3 points and 3 away goals.

However, his Super Eagles teammate Nathan Tella sat out the entire match on the bench.

Bayern Leverkusen, who won the league last year without defeat, took the lead after Granit Xhaka took just 12 minutes to score his first goal of the season with a powerful half-volley against his former team.

Florian Wirtz scored the second goal in the 38th minute to give Bayern Leverkusen a two-point lead, but the advantage was wiped out when Nico Elvedi started the comeback in search of a goal in the 59th minute with a header.

Three minutes later, the Borussia Park fans erupted in jubilation when debutant striker Tim Kleindienst levelled the game with a superb finish.

But the champions found the key to putting all three points into play thanks to a Florian Wirtz penalty goal in the 102nd minute, as the match was extended beyond the 100th minute due to a lengthy VAR review of Gladbach’s goals by referee Robert Schröder, leading to ten minutes of added time.

The remaining matches for week 1 of the 2024/2025 Bundesliga will be played this weekend.
