Borno Gov, Zulum, to reconcile 6,000 IDP families in the midst of increasing social crime in Kamp

The Governor of the State Borno Babagana Zulum has announced plans to reconcile 6,000 families who currently live in the Muna camp internally transferred (IDP) in Maiduguri, quoting an unsettling improvement in social crime such as prostitution, gangsterism, and child harassment in the camp.

Zulum made an announcement on Monday during the official visit to the Muna camp, one of the largest in the state and home for around 11,000 families moved by the Boko Haram rebellion. That step, he said, is part of a broader effort to restore normal conditions, enable independence, and overcome security problems related to prolonged camp life.

“True is, we cannot end Boko Haram without reciprocating our people,” said the Governor, spoke to journalists after touring the camp. “We have seen an increase in the level of crime. Our people need to return to their community and rebuild their lives.”

Governor Zulum noted that the government of the state of Borno began plans for almost four years ago to close the formal IDP camps in Maiduguri. So far, 12 camps have been closed, with only two informal settlements that are still operating.

“We have retorted 75 percent of refugees in the Muna camp. The remaining 25 percent will return to their ancestral homes in the coming days,” he said.

Return packages include food supplies, building materials, health care support, and financial assistance to help families rebuild themselves. The head of each household, both male or female, will receive N100,000, while housewives will get an additional N50,000 to support household needs.

Zulum, known for his frequent visit to the crisis and IDP camps, emphasized that this initiative was not only humanity but strategic in solving the cycle of dependency and restoring dignity to neglected residents.

“We cannot let our people be reduced to become permanent campsites. They deserve better,” he said.
