Breaking: For the third time, Atiku threw PDP, joining Obi, Amaechi, El-Rufai in the Anti-Tinubu Coalition

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar once again resigned from the people’s Democratic Party (PDP), marked a significant political change ahead of the 2027 general election.

Atiku, who was the carrier of the PDP President’s flag in the 2023 election, made his resignation known in a letter that appeared on Wednesday and was confirmed by various sources close to the former Vice President.

This step was carried out only a few weeks after Atiku spearheaded the formation of a new political alliance under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), joining troops with main opposition figures, including Peter Obi from the Labor Party, former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and former Governor of Kaduna Nasir El-Rufai.

The coalition, according to insiders, is aimed at shifting the President of the Ball Ahmed Tinubu and the Congress of All Progressive (APC) who are in power in the 2027 election.

Although Atiku has not yet openly overcome his next political steps, the source said the new front had developed a strategy to bring united and tough opposition. His resignation from PDP, the third time, is expected to trigger the effects of ripples in the party, which has struggled to maintain cohesion after the defeat of the 2023 election.

Atiku’s latest step, if confirmed, will mark the third time he has left the party since returning to democracy in 1999.

This is not the first exit of Atiku from PDP. In 2006, he left the party to join the Action Congress (ACN) (now dead), where he nominated himself as president in 2007.

He then returned to PDP, only to leave again in 2013, becoming a member of the Founder of the Congress of All Progressive (APC) before rejoining the PDP ahead of the 2019 election, where he ran and lost to the President Muhammadu Buhari who was related.

He also fought for the 2023 presidential election under PDP but lost to President Tinubu.

The latest Atiku political maneuvers indicate other dramatic rearrangement in the ranks of Nigerian opposition. According to insiders, the new coalition has mapped strategies to present unity front and build credible challenges for APC in power in 2027.
