Breaking: Fubara back while Tinubu raises the state of emergency in the state of the rivers

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally announced the end of the state of emergency in the state of sparrows, six months after he has been declared to resolve a paralyzing governance crisis.

On Wednesday, in a national broadcast, the president declared that the suspension of the governor Siminalayi Fubara, the deputy governor Ngozi NMA Odu and members of the assembly Chamber of the State of the Rivers would have expired at midnight, opening the way to a full return to the democratic government from Thursday 18 September.

Tinubu recalled that the state of emergency, proclaimed on March 18, 2025, became necessary following a political deadline between the manager and the legislator in the state of spinners. He observed that the division within the assembly chamber and his conflict with the governor had paralyzed the governance, interrupted the economic activities and even pushed the Supreme Court to declare that there was actually no government in the state.

“The situation had achieved a total breaking point of public order and public safety,” said the president. “It would have been a colossal failure on my part not to have made this announcement.”

While recognizing the dissenting voices that contested the legality of his decision in over 40 judicial cases, Tinubu stressed that the declaration was constitutionally supported and necessary to prevent anarchy.

The president expressed gratitude to the National Assembly, to the traditional sovereigns and the people of the rivers for their support during the emergency period. He also praised recent signs of reconciliation and cooperation between the parties concerned in the state, describing them as a “basis of a new spirit of understanding”.

“With the effect of midnight today, the emergency in the state of the rivers must end,” said Tinubu. “The Governor, the deputy governor and members of the assembly Chamber will resume work on their offices from 18 September 2025.”

The president also urged leaders throughout the country to give priority to harmony between executive and legislative weapons of the government, warning that democracy cannot thrive in an atmosphere of conflict and disorder.

“Only in an atmosphere of peace, order and good government can we deliver the dividends of democracy to our people,” he said.
