Nigeria will begin their campaign in the race to qualify for the next Africa Cup of Nations in September when they take on Benin Republic in Uyo. Own goal Nigeria.com reports.
As we exclusively reported yesterday, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has sent a provisional invitation to 35 players who will be part of the squad for the upcoming AFCON qualifier, despite the team not having a substantial coach at the moment.
Following the departure of Finidi George as coach, the NFF technical department has compiled the list of players for the game, and it will be handed over to whoever gets the nod as coach of the team which is expected to be announced soon.
The new coach is expected to whittle down the roster to a manageable and sizeable 25 for the game, which will see the Super Eagles go all out to exact revenge after losing to the same opponent in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Among the new players called up to the squad is Brentford defender Benjamin Fredrick, who has impressed in pre-season with the team following his permanent transfer to the club from Simoiben Football Academy, following a successful loan spell last season with the B team.
Fredrick, who was a member of Nigeria’s U-20 squad at the last U-20 World Cup, is not the only new name on the list. AS Trencin’s Suleiman Sani also features after a splendid season with Akwa United last season.
The GBS of Joe Academy graduate was close to making the squad for the final round of games but was omitted due to club commitment.
