Former President Muhammadu Buhari has urged the governor elected under the Congress platform of all Progressive Congress (APC) to focus their leadership on the welfare of the Nigerians rather than personal interests.
The former president gave this accusation during a full visit of courtesy by a member of the Progressive Governor Forum to his residence in Daura, Katsina State, on Monday. This visit was intended to encourage party unity and seek his advice about leadership.
According to a statement issued Wednesday by his senior special assistant about the media and publicity, Garba Shehu, Buhari stressed the importance of government that focuses on citizens and uses his own term as an example of personal restraint.
“I left the office with the same physical assets that I had before my presidential period,” Buhari said to the governors, underlining his commitment to politeness and service.
He encouraged the APC Governor to embrace the approach of citizens to governance, describing leadership as a balance of complicated challenges and opportunities that, if managed correctly, can direct the country towards sustainable progress.

“I am proud of the progress made by the APC Governor,” he said. “Leadership requires sacrifice. Leaders must provide important interests for the welfare of the people, not their own.”
Buhari stated his appreciation to the President of Bola Ahmed Tinubu for renovating his house in Kaduna, acknowledged the improvement made in the structure even though the exterior had not changed.
He also thanked the Governor for the visit, noting that while he had worked with some of them during his term of office, some were new faces that he was happy to meet.
The meeting took place in the high profile of the former Governor of the State Kaduna Nasir El-Rufai from APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). In the BBC Hausa interview in early March, El-Rufai revealed that he consulted with Buhari before moving.
“I left APC with full knowledge,” El-Rufai said. “I involved and consult with him in all my problems.”
However, Buhari moves to eliminate the assumption that he distances himself from APC or works against his interests. He emphasized that his loyalty that was not shaken to the party who gave him a mandate twice to lead Nigeria.
