The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has revoked its approval for Ghana’s Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
According to CAF, technical problems, including an unsuitable playing field, prompted the action.
This decision follows CAF’s assessment of the stadium following the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match between Ghana and Angola, scheduled for 5 September 2024.
CAF inspectors identified several problems at the stadium, which has a capacity of more than 40,000 people.
The most critical issue was the condition of the playing field, which was deemed unsuitable for high-level matches due to uneven surfaces, poor drainage and inadequate grass cover.
CAF had expressed concern ahead of the match, pointing to persistent problems at Baba Yara Stadium as well as other stadiums in Ghana including Cape Coast Stadium and Accra Sports Stadium.
These problems have continued, leading CAF to withdraw its approval for the Kumasi venue to host Category 3 international matches.
The decision leaves Ghana without any CAF-approved stadium for upcoming AFCON qualifying matches.
CAF has asked the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to find an alternative venue outside Ghana for the upcoming matches.
The confederation board also recommended that Ghanaian authorities carry out a full assessment of all international stadiums in the country and begin refurbishment work immediately.

CAF offered to assist by providing an international pitch consultant with experience in AFCON tournaments to guide the necessary improvements, while the GFA would cover the costs.
