CAFWCL: Edo Queens take charge of WAFU Group B as AS-Garde Nationale take five

Nigerian women champions Edo Queens started their CAF Women’s Champions League, WAFU B qualifiers on a winning note by defeating AS Garde of Niger Republic 5-0 on Sunday, Sports 247 reports.

The match which was played in Bouake, Ivory Coast, saw Nigeria take a two-goal lead at half-time with midfield maestro Emem Essien opening the scoring in the 35th minute before team captain Suliat Abideen converted from the penalty spot a minute into first-half added time.

Edo took full control of the match in the second half, picking up where they left off at the break when Ilivieda extended the lead through a free-kick, Moses Esther made it four before Emem Essien blocked the floodgates by scoring the fifth goal of the game.

The team’s superlative performance takes them to the top as the other group match ended goalless between Hassacas Ladies of Ghana and As Entincelles of Burkina Faso.

A win for Edo Queens in their next match against Hassacas Ladies of Ghana will guarantee them a place in the Semi-Final before the final group match against AO Enticelles.

The match will be held on Wednesday 14 August 2024 at 4pm Nigerian time at the Stade de Bouake.

The WAFU B tournament serves as a qualifier for the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League, with the overall winner taking home the sole ticket allocated to West Africa’s Region B.
