A Colombian senator who nominated himself to be the next president of the country was shot and “critically” injured at a campaign general meeting in Bogota, the authorities said.
Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, 39, is targeted during a campaign event in a park in the Fontibon area of ββthe Capital of Colombia, according to the Attorney General’s Office.
He suffered two gunshot wounds and was seen covered in blood because he was assisted by helpers and people in the crowd.
According to a medical report at the Santa Fe Foundation Hospital, he was treated there in “critical condition” and still undergoing “procedures for nerve and peripheral surgery”.
Two other people were injured but the nature of their wounds had not been published.
A 15 -year -old male suspect was arrested at the scene and was being treated for a foot injury, said Police Chief General Carlos Triana.
Uribe Turbay, who announced his president’s offer to the Right Wing Democratic Central Party in March, was accompanied by a team consisting of 21 people at the time of the shooting, his office said, including the Board member Andres Barrios.
He hoped to run for the presidential election which took place on May 31 next year – and replaced President Gustavo Petro, the first left leader of the country.
His father, who was a journalist, kidnapped and killed in 1991 during one of the most cruel periods of the history of Colombia.

His wife Maria Claudia Tarazone wrote in X that she “struggled for her life” and urged Colombians to pray for her.
His party described it as “unacceptable acts of violence”, while US Secretary Marco Rubio condemned him in “the term as possible”.
Writing at X, Mr. Rubio also urged the current Colombian president to “recall inflammatory rhetoric and protect Colombian officials”.
Former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, who was not related to Mr. Uribe Turbay, said that the armed man “attacked the expectations of the country, great husband, son, brother -ladder, and a great colleague”.
He canceled the planned journey to France because of the “seriousness of the event”, his office said in a statement, with law enforcement officers offering prizes to help demand the perpetrators.
The message of support was outlined from other places in Latin America, with President Chilel Gabriel Boric said: “There is no space or justification for violence in democracy,” and Ecuador President Daniel Noboa added: “We condemn all forms of violence and intolerance.”
