Cannes: Iranian director of the dissident won the palme d’Or at the Film Festival | Sents & Arts News

Iranian director of the Jafar Pahani dissident – who has been captured several times in Iran for the making of the film – has won the prestigious Palme D’Or award at the 78th Cannes Film Festival.

Inspired by his own experience in prison, this film tells the story of a dissolved dissident who kidnapped a man who resembled someone who tortured him in prison. Immediately, the protagonist questioned whether more violence was the right approach to ensuring justice.

The film maker, whose appearance at the festival was the first in 15 years due to a travel ban, using his acceptance speech to speak against the regime.

He said: “Hope that we will reach the day when no one will tell us what to use or not, what to do or not do”, in a referral to the rule of simplicity of Iran that is strict for women.

He said: “Win or not, I will return in any way. Don’t be afraid of challenges.”

Pahani has now won the top prizes in the three major European festivals – after winning the Golden Lion in Venice for the circle in 2000, and the Berlin Gold Bear for a taxi in 2015.
