Marin Cilic has become the oldest champion of the grass field in the history of the ATP Challenger tour on Saturday in Nottingham.
Former player n. 3 In the Pif ATP rankings he defeated Shintaro Mochizuki 6-2, 6-3 in the final to win the Lexus Nottingham Open.
At 36 years old and eight months, Cilic beat Andy Murray’s record for the oldest challenger on the Titlist Erba field (36 years old and a month, two years ago in Nottingham).
Cilic saved a game point in the semifinal against Martin Landaluce and brought his momentum to the championship match.
The first Croatian to win a challenger of the Erba camp saved the only interruption point he had to face, according to the statistics of Infosys ATP.
The champion Girona Challenger of this year became the seventh player to claim tourist tourleger tour events on clay and grass in the same season. He raised four Challenger trophies in his career. Before Girona, he had not triumphed at the level since May 2007 in Rijeka.
Cilic on Monday will return to the top 100 of the PIF ATP rankings for the first time from August 2023
