The Federal Government has standardized the retail price of the compressed natural gas (CNG) to N380 for Standard Cubic Metro (SCM) in Lagos and Abuja, aligning these cities with the uniform rate already applied nationally.
This change, in force since 1 September 2025, represents a significant increase compared to the previous price of N230/SCM in these cities.
The new price brings Lagos and Abuja in line with other parts of the country, where the N380/SCM rate was implemented two months earlier.
Lagos and Abuja motorists will now pay N380/SCM, compared to N230/SCM, while prices in other positions remain stable.

Despite the increase, the methane remains an economic alternative to petrol, with prices ranging from N855 to N865 per liter to Lagos and N890 to N910 per liter in Abuja.
The experts in the sector suggest that the prices between N407 and N520 for SCM would be ideal for commercial profitability, considering the costs of infrastructure, distribution and maintenance.
The Nigerian government has launched the presidential natural gas initiative (PCNGI) in 2023 to promote the adoption of the CNG as a cleaner and more convenient fuel option.
Over 65 daughter stations were operational in 21 states, supported by over $ 450 million in investments.
However, the adoption was slower than expected, with only about 50,000 vehicles converted in a methane survey at noon in January 2025, very below the goal of one million by 2027.
