The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) has issued a stern warning to the National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a neutral and transparent electoral process in the Edo State Governorship Election.
In a statement signed by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Comrade James Ezema, the CNPP stressed that INEC must remain neutral during the counting of results, as Edo State residents had exercised their right to vote.
The CNPP expressed concern about potential manipulation of the results by leading political parties, stressing that the Electoral Commission must uphold the trust of the Nigerian people by prioritizing the integrity of the process. They warned against undermining democracy in the state, stressing that the Electoral Commission must not allow itself to be used to undermine democracy in Edo State under any circumstances.
“We are worried by the allegations we received from Edo State, confirming a deliberate ploy by one of the major parties to alter the results and figures already on the Electoral Commission Portal,” Comrade Ezema said. “Mr. President must discipline them. The Electoral Commission must not allow itself to be used to undermine democracy in Edo State under any circumstances.”

The CNPP also stressed the importance of the KPU demonstrating its commitment to holding credible elections, especially after the questionable 2023 elections. They appealed to all stakeholders, including political parties, candidates, and security agencies, to prioritize peace and civility during the vote counting process.
“Let us work together to strengthen Nigerian democracy by giving citizens the opportunity to freely choose their leaders,” Comrade Ezema said. “We call on the Electoral Commission to ensure that the election results reflect the true will of the people of Edo State.”
As election results are announced, the Electoral Commission has begun releasing the results of the 2024 Edo State governorship election, with live updates being provided. The CNPP’s call to action comes as Nigerians watch closely to see if the Electoral Commission will live up to its promise of a free and fair election.
