The American Danielle Collins completed a complete victory for the straight set compared to the Iga Swiatek reigning champion in the third round of the Italian open.
Collins capitalized on a poor service show from the number two Swiatek World Championships to navigate the opening set before fighting from a break in the second to win a 6-1 7-5 victory.
It was only his second win in nine games against the five -time champion of the Grand Slam and the first on Clay, the favorite surface of the 23 -year -old pole.
Collins, 31, will have to face Ukrainian Elina Svitolina in the fourth round, while Swiatek has now grouped in front of the French Open, which begins on May 25th.
The five -time champion of the Grand Slam had won the Italian Open in three of the last four seasons, but fought for its best form in view of this year’s event in Rome.
Swiatek has not won a WTA tournament since he claimed his fourth title for individual open Women in five years in Roland Garros 12 months ago.
He started badly, serving double defects when he faced the pause point in his first two service games and lost his third to love while the 29th seed Collins took the lead for 5-0.
Swiatek finally went up to the scoreboard in the sixth game, but was promptly broken for the fourth time to lose the opening set in just 24 minutes.
He broke Collins in the opening game of the second set, but was not able to cement the break again.
Collins fought hard to keep at the level of the level for the rest of the second set before leaping in the twelfth game, claiming a sixth service pause in the game to seal the victory with his second game point while Swiatek filed a backhand.
The next Collins’ opponent, sixteenth Svitolina seed, crossed a three set battle with the 23-year-old American Hailey Baptiste, beating the world number 90 6-4 3-6 6-4.
Elsewhere, the Italian number one Jasmine Paolini-The Sesto Seme-His passed an ON of-Sorts Ons Jabeur 6-4 6-3 to seal a place in the last 16, where he will meet the 17th seed Jelena Ostapenko, in Latvia.
The fifth seed Madison Keys has lost against his American colleague Peyton Stearns in another shock, with the Australian champion Open he eliminated a final draw.
