Court postpones alleged perjury case against Edo APC candidate Okpebholo indefinitely

Justice Abubakar Mukhtar of the Magistrates Court in Abuja on Friday, adjourned the hearing in the alleged perjury case filed against the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, indefinitely.

The postponement follows an order by Justice OC Agbaza of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court granting Okpebholo leave to file a review application against Mukhtar’s criminal summons against him.

Justice Agbaza, who granted an ex-parte motion filed by Okpebholo’s lawyer, Adaze Emwanta, adjourned the matter to October 28 for hearing.

The judge on September 12 summoned Okpebholo for allegedly making a false statement regarding his date of birth.

APC candidates have been asked to appear in court on the afternoon of September 20 (today).

He was accused of listing conflicting birth dates in his nomination form submitted to the National Election Commission (KPU) for the election.

The case with suit number CR/W22/816/2024 was filed by an indigene of Edo State, Honesty Aginbatse.

Against this order, Okpebholo, through his lawyer, Emwanta, filed a suit at the FCT High Court.

The applicant listed Messrs. Aginbatse and Mukhtar as respondents.

After the ex-parte motion was filed, Judge Agbaza granted the two requested reliefs.

However, when the matter came up on Friday in the Magistrates Court, neither Aginbatse nor Okpebholo was present in court.

Aginbatse’s lawyer, RO Azinye, told the court the matter was scheduled for mention.

Azinye told the court that Okpebholo had not been served with a hearing notice after several attempts.
