Crucial technology to face financial crimes – ICPC boss

The president of independent corrupt practices and other related crimes (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu San, underlined the importance of digital surveillance in curbing financial corruption and promoting transparency in governance.

Speaking as a guest at the debate of the 2025 JCI ASO secondary school held in Abuja on Friday, dr. Aliyu described digital monitoring as a “turning point” in the fight against corruption.

The theme of the event was the role of technology in the fight against financial corruption: a turning point or an imperfect solution?

“The surveillance of digital transactions is crucial to combat corruption and guarantee financial integrity,” said Aliyu.

“Corruption hinders economic growth and creates environments in favor of financial crimes”.

Aliyu has mentioned international examples, including Kenya’s financial management systems and Brazil’s online expense monitoring tools, as proof of the success of digital paintings.

He also referred to the centralized Chinese financial system and the regulatory efforts of Nigeria to reduce fraud within banking operations.

“Digital platforms improve public service and reduce corruption opportunities,” he added.

“Investing in digital transformation is essential for national development and governance”.

However, he recognized the need for global legislation to balance privacy problems and effective surveillance.

The secondary school of the government, Karshi, emerged as the winner of the highly contested debate. Merosa Academy, Kubwa, has secured second place, while Stella Maris College and Metro International Secondary School, both from Kubwa, arrived respectively third and fourth.

The executive vice -president of JCI Aso, the ambassador Emmanuel Peter, said that the annual debate, now in its twelfth edition, aims to inspire language in public, critical thinking and leadership among young people.

“This is our way of saying students to align their thoughts with future realities. Technology is changing everything – from the economy to governance – and young people must be prepared,” said Peter.

He underlined that the debate aligns with the aim of sustainable development 4, which promotes quality education and is organized in collaboration with the FCT Secondary Education Board and the Federal Ministry of Education.

In his message of goodwill, the CEO of Senior Sales and Development of MTN, Usman Muhammad, praised JCI ASO and has promised continuous support for educational initiatives.

“This is part of our corporate social responsibility. Mtn is ready to do more and deepen the partnerships that support young people,” he said.

The event was not only as a platform for academic commitment, but also a reflection of the growing efforts to involve young people in national speech on integrity, leadership and innovation.
