A man has died and a child has been injured after the shooting incident at a shopping center at Co Carlow.
The incident occurred at the Fairgreen shopping center in Carlow City around 18:15.
It can be understood that the wound of the dead was caused by himself. The body is still at the scene and will not be removed until the area is declared safe.
The girl received treatment from paramedics at the scene but did not require treatment at the hospital, said the police. It is unclear how the wounds are suffered, added them.
The army explosion weaponry (EOD) disposal team has been asked to attend the scene as a precaution.
The shopping center has been evacuated, and a large rope already exists.
Police, Ambulance and Fire Extinguisher Service are at the scene, and a helicopter floated above the head.
A police spokesman said: “At present, there is no further concern for public safety.”
Anyone who might have a record of the incident is urged to give it to the authorities instead of dividing it on social media or messaging applications.
Taoiseach Micheal Martin said he was “surprised and sad” by the shooting.
He added: “My mind with an affected family and the local community in Carlow after what is a very serious and traumatic incident.
“I urge anyone who has information to talk to Gardai”.
