Dr. Amos Adamu appointed the great patron of Samuel Okwaraji Football Championship U-16

In a significant impulse for the development of base football in Nigeria, the former general director of the National Sports Commission, Dr. Amos Adamu, has been officially appointed great patron of the Soccer Championship of the Secondary School of All Nigeria Samuel Okwaraji.

Dr. Adamu accepted the honorary role during a courtesy visit from the Samuel Okwaraji Foundation to his residence in Abuja, where he reaffirmed his commitment to for life with youth sports and national development. He praised the late hero of football Samuel Okwaraji as a symbol of patriotism and sacrifice, describing the tournament as a vital legacy project to immortalize his contribution to Nigerian football.

“Samuel Okwaraji remains a lighthouse of national pride whose selfless sacrifice continues to inspire. I am deeply honored to support this noble initiative aimed at promoting young talents and preserving their legacy,” said Dr. Adamu.

He urged the Nigerian government and corporate entities to channel more resources in sports programs focused on youth, emphasizing that such initiatives are essential to empower the youth population of the Nation.

The former player and coach of the Super Eagles, Samson Siasia, who praised the life impact of Dr. Adamu on Nigerian sports. Siasia expressed optimism that the tournament would dig up future soccer stars in the Okwaraji mold, who died tragically in the field while representing Nigeria in 1989.

Also speaking at the event, Chidozie Achonwa, secretary of the Samuel Okwaraji Foundation, praised Okwaraji as “a national icon and a unity symbol.” He highlighted the mission of the foundation to use sports as a tool for social change and youth development, thanking Dr. Adamu for their past efforts, including its fundamental role in the repatriation of Okwaraji belongings from Belgium to Nigeria.

The championship, scheduled to present high school teams throughout the country, will culminate in a grand finale in Abuja and is expected to become a flagship event in the Nigeria youth sports calendar.

Other dignitaries in the event included Stella Agu, former captain of the First Bank basketball team; Dr. Okechukwu Duru; and members of the Samuel Okwaraji Foundation.

The event marks a new chapter on the way to promote youth football in Nigeria, with the support of Dr. Amos Adamu seen as a catalyst for greater national and international support.
