The Revenue Mobilization and Fiscal Allocation Commission (RMAFC) said on Tuesday that each of the country’s 109 senators earns ₦1,063,860 in salary and allowances every month.
RMAFC Chairman, Muhammad Bello Shehu, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.
He was reacting to claims by former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, about the monthly income of lawmakers.
Sani in a post on his X account said each senator collects ₦13.5 million per month in addition to the ₦750,000.00 determined by the commission.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also criticized lawmakers for fixing their salaries.
The RMAFC Chairman in the statement gave the breakdown of the salaries and allowances of each senator as Basic Salary – ₦168,866:70, Motor Vehicle Fueling and Maintenance Allowance – ₦126,650:00, Personal Assistant – ₦42,216:66, Household Staff -₦126,650:00, Entertainment – ₦50,660:00, Utilities – ₦50,660:00, Newspapers/Periodics – ₦25,330:00, Wardrobe – ₦42,216.66:00; Housekeeping – ₦8,443.33:00 and Constituency Allowance – ₦422,166:66, respectively.
However, he stressed that the RMAFC does not have the authority to ensure the implementation of parliamentarians’ salary packages.
“However, this gap is being addressed by the National Assembly,” he said.
Regarding allowances, Shehu said that there are allowances that are routine and some that are not routine.
He added: “Routine allowances are paid periodically along with the basic salary, while non-routine allowances are paid when due.
“For example, the furniture allowance (₦6,079,200:00) and severance pay (₦6,079,200:00) are paid once per term of office, and the optional vehicle allowance (₦8,105,600:00) is a loan that must be paid by the recipient before leaving office.”
