Monrovia, September 8, 2025: Liberia’s Finance and Development Planning Minister, Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, states that the government has made notable strides in strengthening the economy, highlighting the improved availability of essential goods, stable fuel and rice supplies, and the consistent payment of civil servants’ wages.

Speaking on state radio on Monday, September 8, Minister Ngafuan reflected on the country’s economic past, noting that scenes of water shortages, long lines at gas stations, and mothers struggling to find rice are no longer a common reality.

He stressed that the supply of gasoline has remained steady for nearly two years, prices have declined, and no major disruptions have been recorded.

Rice, Liberia’s staple food, has also maintained a relatively stable price, an outcome Ngafuan said has helped ease the financial burden on households.

On the welfare of public workers, the finance minister assured that salary payments have been largely regularized.

According to him, July salaries were disbursed before the 18th of the month. While acknowledging occasional technical issues with banks crediting accounts on time, he noted that the overall system has shown significant improvement.

He pointed out that even brief payment delays now trigger public concern a sign, he argued, of the higher standards and expectations compared to the past, when workers endured months-long salary arrears.

Minister Ngafuan further disclosed that, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Liberia, the government is digitalizing the economy to improve efficiency. This includes the launch of a national payment switch designed to streamline transactions and cut delays in salary disbursements.

While admitting that challenges remain, Ngafuan concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding economic stability and maintaining improved standards of service delivery.
