EDO ELECTION: Why I stormed the Election Commission office at 1am —Obaseki

Outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has explained why he stormed the state’s vote counting centre in Benin City, early Sunday.

Obaseki, speaking at a press conference on Sunday, said he was at the counting station at around 1 a.m. to get first-hand information on what was happening after the Election Commission (EC) stopped announcing the results without giving any information to the public.

Obaseki had stormed the State Auditing Centre at INEC offices in Benin City in the early hours of Sunday but was chased away by police led by DIG Frank Mba.

The governor said his visit came after failing to reach the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Edo State, Anugbum Onuoha.

He said, “Around 1:00 a.m., I received a report that the coalition was supposed to be moved to the KPU headquarters. I also received a report from our agent that PPP agents were not allowed to enter the coalition process. At that time, I called the KPU to ask for an explanation of what was happening. There was no response.

“I then went to the KPU to meet with the KPU to try to understand the steps the KPU was taking to continue the vote counting process. When I arrived there at around 2am, I did not see any coalition and the KPU refused to come out to explain the situation.

“Then the Regional Police Chief Frank Mba came and had a meeting with me. I explained that if the KPU postpones or stops the vote counting process, then according to KPU regulations, the KPU must inform the public what to do next.

“As of 03.00 WIB, there has been no information from the KPU regarding what will happen or what will happen next. After I pressed and met with Mr. Frank Mba, the KPU only issued a statement at around 05.00 WIB this morning informing the public that the vote counting process will begin at 10.00 WIB this morning.

“So, my purpose in going there was basically to get information from the KPU because they refused to provide any information to the public about what was going to happen with the vote counting process.”
