EDO GOVERNOR ELECTION: KPU extends voter card collection, raises stakes

The National Election Commission (KPU) has announced a significant extension for the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (KTP).

The decision, revealed on Thursday, comes in response to widespread calls from stakeholders.

Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner, who disclosed the extension during a press conference in Benin City, the state capital, said, “The commission has granted a three-day extension from Friday, September 13 to Sunday, September 15,”

Olumekun said, speaking before a room full of journalists and election observers.

The move pushes the PVC collection deadline to less than a week before the gubernatorial election scheduled for Sept. 21, providing a last-minute opportunity for eligible voters to secure their ballots.

The decision to extend the PVC collection period emerged from a high-stakes interactive meeting held by INEC with key stakeholders in Benin.

Olumekun explained the significance of the meeting, saying, “The meeting was attended by political party leaders, candidates, traditional and religious leaders, security agencies, civil society organizations, and the media.” The broad spectrum of participants highlighted the inclusive approach taken by the KPU to ensure the smooth running of the election process.

According to Olumekun, the extension was a direct response to the unanimous call from the stakeholders. “The stakeholders unanimously appealed to the commission to consider extending the PVC collection to enable more voters to get their cards,” he explained, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the decision-making process.

The meeting was also attended by a number of senior officials, including the Electoral Commission Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu and Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun. Their presence and engagement with stakeholders underscored the national significance of the upcoming Edo election and the commitment of the electoral and security apparatus to its success.

Detailing the logistics of the extension, Olumekun said, “The cards will be available for collection at 18 local government offices across the state from 9am to 5pm daily.” The decentralized approach aims to make the collection process accessible to voters across Edo State.

However, the KPU National Commissioner was quick to stress an important caveat: “There will be no voting through proxies, in accordance with KPU policy.” This strict adherence to established protocols reflects the KPU’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the voter registration process and preventing potential electoral fraud.

As the September 21 general elections approach, all eyes will be on the ability of the Electoral Commission to effectively manage this lengthy polling period. The Electoral Commission’s performance in this crucial phase could determine the direction of the entire electoral process in Edo State, with potential implications for future elections across Nigeria.

With tensions rising and stakes rising, Edo State is at the epicentre of Nigeria’s journey towards democratic consolidation. As voters flock to secure their PVCs, and candidates make their final speeches, the days ahead promise to be a critical period in shaping the political future of this important Nigerian state.
