A leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Dan Orbih has congratulated Philip Shaibu after the court delivered a verdict quashing his impeachment as Deputy Governor of Edo State.
Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday delivered a judgment quashing the impeachment of Shuaibu, stating that the Edo State House of Representatives had failed to comply with due process in impeaching Shuaibu.
Responding to the ruling on Wednesday, Orbih’s chief said that “the lessons learned in this unfortunate drama will certainly deepen democracy and enhance adherence to the rule of law,” in the state and the country.
He asked Shaibu to serve the remainder of his term of office with a spirit of forgiveness and fear of God.
He further said that he was “deeply saddened to witness the unfortunate drama of the impeachment process “which is widely reported to have been instigated by some elements within the country’s government”.
According to him, the High Court ruling was a significant victory in the legal battle against the unlawful impeachment by some members of the Edo State House of Representatives.
“I am very happy with this decision because I was the one who led the campaign that brought you and Governor Godwin Obaseki to a second term as Governor and Deputy Governor of the state in 2020.

“… It is ironic that the passion and priority given to impeachment is lacking in the implementation of the policies and programmes of the government for which I came to the pulpit to promise Edo people that you and the principals will achieve.
“As you return as governor of Edo State, I implore you to use your office to bring zeal to the programmes and policies of governance, that is, so that we are not completely disgraced as a party that has failed to deliver on our promises to the good people of Edo State,” he said.
Orbih further urged Shaibu to act within the ambit of the constitution as the “ELECTED and LEGALLY AUTHORIZED Deputy Governor of Edo State”.
He also appealed to all political actors in the state to make this decision the basis for new and better relations, especially within the PDP and all citizens.
“Justice, as you know, is the cornerstone of a social system. Plato described Justice as ‘giving to each his due’. I am glad you have restated it appropriately. The lessons learned in this unfortunate drama will surely deepen our democracy and enhance adherence to the rule of law. I pray that you may serve the remainder of your term in the spirit of forgiveness and the fear of God in all that you do. Be tolerant but firm,” he said.
