EFCC arrests fake State House staff over alleged N22m employment fraud

Agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested a fake State House Staff syndicate in Abuja on suspicion of criminal conspiracy, false representation and employment fraud.

A statement by Dele Oyewale, Chairman, Media & Publicity at the commission stated that the suspects were arrested separately following investigations into petitions from various victims who were promised jobs as “Director General” in the Ministry of Communications, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) Road Safety Corps Federal (FRSC) and other ministries.

The suspects are; Augustine Enamegbai Umogboi who claims to be a former DPR staffer, Eleojo Josephine Idakwo, a fake Ministry of Information staffer in the Registry Unit, and Kingsley Onuh who also claims to have just completed the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC.

Others are Omata Sunday and Eljayon Nigeria Limited, one of the companies whose bank accounts they used to obtain money from their victims.

They were said to also have different account numbers in different banks where they allegedly received N22.3 million from different victims.

From our observations, it was revealed that Umogboi was arrested on June 16 2024, Idakwo was arrested on April 30 2024, and Onuh was arrested on April 3 2024.

Many alleged victims narrated their bitter experiences in a series of petitions written to the EFCC.

“The sample petition reads: “we have reliable information that sometime in April 2023, Mr. Gabriel Kingsley Onuh informed our clients of employment opportunities at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation LTD (NNPCL) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). With support from Eleojo Josephine Idakwo who claimed to be working at NNPCL, they attempted to help Mr Toheeb Adesina and Miss Asabe Gambo to get jobs at NNPCL, as well as Mr Tertindi Reginald Igbayue at FRSC, for a fee. It was agreed that the payment would be made in two stages, namely the initial payment and the remaining payment when the letter of employment is ready and when the credential documentation begins.”

Another victim in the petition written to the EFCC stated that “Sometime in May 2023, one of my friends, Sunday Omata, approached me and Eleojo Josephine Idakwu telling him that their office at the Presidential Villa was responsible for screening applicants for the appointment of ‘Director General all Ministries and Parastatals in the current government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Because of that they wanted me to apply for the position of Director General at the Ministry of Transportation. But he gave me a condition that I had to pay them Five Million Naira (N5,000,000) before they could start the process. Since it involves a big office, they cannot make all the contacts for free and their bosses in the office also need some money. Since then, they have asked for various kinds of money from me in various accounts.”

The EFCC spokesperson also said “The suspects have provided useful information to the EFCC and will be charged to court once investigations are completed”.
