The Economic and Financial Crimes Eradication Commission (ECI) has dismissed reports of the sharing of funds seized from friends of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor Godwin Emefiele by his operatives and government officials.
An online platform reported during the week that some KPK officials, ministers and presidential aides shared over N50 billion worth of money lost by associates of the former CBN governor who is on trial in several competent courts for alleged abuse of office.
EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, made the clarification in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.
He said no EFCC officials were involved in the distribution of proceeds from the seized assets.
The spokesperson stressed that the person behind the report was not aware of the existing asset recovery and management framework.

Oyewale said: βThe Economic and Financial Crimes Eradication Commission has condemned as fake news the report by the online news platform, which alleged that the β¦54 billion looted by some associates of the former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, was βsharedβ among some ministers and aides of President Tinubu, in connivance with EFCC officials.
“No Commission official is or has ever been involved in the ‘sharing’ of proceeds from seized assets. The notion of ‘sharing of proceeds from seized assets’ is unknown to the Commission.
βNeither the EFCC Act of 2004 nor the Proceeds of Crime (Recovery and Management) Act of 2022 are ambiguous regarding the account into which proceeds from seized assets should be paid.
βThere is no βplatformβ for βdistribution of seized assetsβ; the idea itself is absurd. Otherwise, news platforms would provide information about when and how the division of assets took place and who received what.β
