EFCC says Yahaya Bello camp is lying, claims ex-governor didn’t visit its office

The Economic and Financial Crimes Eradication Commission (KPK) has vehemently denied reports that former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello is in their custody.

In a statement released on Wednesday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale clarified that Bello is still wanted for alleged money laundering charges amounting to N80.2 billion, with an outstanding arrest warrant.

Oyewale stressed, “Media reports claiming that Yahaya Bello is in our detention facility are not true. The Commission wishes to state that Bello is not in its custody.”

The EFCC had previously declared Bello a wanted person, and according to Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC’s Acting Director of Public Affairs, the Commission has a “stellar track record in prosecuting people with outspoken political views” and will continue to carry out its mandate in the interest of the nation.

The former governor’s media office earlier in the day released a statement that Bello had agreed to be questioned at the EFCC office, and that he had been accompanied by a number of prominent Nigerians on the visit.

However, the commission has clarified that it was just a ruse and that the former governor never visited their office nor is he in detention.
