Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Technical Director Austine Eguavoen will take charge of the Super Eagles as interim coach for the upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda respectively, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

The NFF has yet to name a replacement for Finidi George, who left his post nearly two months ago due to poor results in World Cup qualifying. Plans to name a replacement before the matches did not materialise.

Talks with the two leading candidates, Janne Andersson and Hervé Renard, will continue in the hope of reaching a favourable conclusion, before the next round of international matches in October.

Already 35 players have received preliminary invitation letters to be part of the squad for the game, and the number is expected to be significantly reduced to 25 before both games, and Eguavoen has been tasked with doing so.

He is expected to remove ten players from the squad and send the list to the NFF for public release on Monday, however, the players on the final list have already been contacted.

As NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau and Secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi are with the Nigeria U-20 women’s team in Colombia for the World Cup, the approval of the roster will likely be delayed by a few days.
