Thursday the National Union of Electricity Employers (Nuee) suspended its industrial actions after the intervention of the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.
The decision was contained in a memorandum of understanding (Mou) signed by Nuee, Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (Ssaeac), the Nigeria transmission company (TCN) and the Ministry of Power.
The suspension followed a meeting in Abuja between officials of the Ministry, TCN management and unions of electric workers. Adelabu, who could not participate in person, was represented by the Director of distribution services of the Ministry and the director of planning, research and statistics.
According to Mou, TCN and the operator of the Integrated System of Nigeria (Niso) will meet to evaluate the financial implications of a Committee report and prepare an implementation plan for the presentation to the minister and the unions. The process is expected to end between 6 and 7 October 2025, with the implementation scheduled to start the same month.
The agreement also in charge of the Nigerian electricity regulatory commission (NERC) to accelerate the action on the revision of the rates for both TCN and NISO in order to facilitate the implementation of the Report Recommendations.
He also ensured to union members that no worker would have been victimized for taking part in industrial action, while both sides agreed to rejoin for further discussions to resolve outstanding issues.
“On the basis of the above, the union has agreed to suspend its action to allow the activation of these resolutions,” said the document.
On Wednesday Nuee had issued a notice of strike, unleashing the fears of a blackout at national level. However, the Nigerian consumer protection network clarified that current interruptions in some parts of Abuja were due to the operational challenges by a distribution company, not a collapse of the national network.
