The Enugu State Electricity Regulation Commission (EERC) has ordered the main electricity distribution company to return more than 20,000 excessively collected customers in April 2025.
This instruction was announced in a statement issued by the Chairman of the EERC, Chijioke Okonkwo, and the Commissioner responsible for market operations, Reuben Okoye, on Monday. The Commission explained that its investigation of the MainPower billing practice revealed “a significant increase in the estimated billing violation.”
“The commission has issued orders to mainpower to return customers affected by the overbilled unit for the energy consumed in April 2025,” EERC notification rang.
According to the commission, the detailed list of all affected customers has been published on the EERC website. MainPower was asked to complete this refund with the July 2025 billing cycle.
EERC also warns severe consequences for non-compliance, which states, “Failure to comply with orders will withdraw N500,000 fines for every day of non-compliance, as regulated in the Enugu 2023 State Electricity Law 2023.”

The commission revealed that they had monitored the mainpower billing practice since October 2024 and had previously raised concerns about deviations through many letters to the company. Apart from this warning, the mainpower reportedly failed to take enough action to overcome the problem.
“The new commission is reviewing the estimated MainPower report April 2025, and observes that the level of violation of the hat on the estimated bill by the mainpower is getting worse from the 24 percent observed in February and March 2025, to 34 percent in April 2025,” Eerc said.
Customers who do not receive their refund in the July 2025 billing cycle are advised to contact EERC directly to get help. “Customers who are affected who do not receive their refunds with a deadline can contact the commission via email at [[emailΒ protected]](Mailto:[emailΒ protected]) Or call 09122642755 for assistance, “added the statement.
