Enugu govt destroys kidnappers’ hideout, finds arms, ammunition

The Enugu State government on Wednesday destroyed properties used by kidnappers to hold their victims on the outskirts of Enugu, the state capital.

The properties, including an unfinished multi-storey building with underground tunnels at Nkwubor Layout in Emene Nike and a large farm at Ogbeke Nike, were demolished in accordance with Section 315 of the Criminal Code (Second Amendment) Law Cap. 30, Laws of Enugu State.

Security officials have raided the hideout, recovered 19 firearms, including AK47 rifles and pump-action shotguns, and rescued several victims after gun battles with the criminals.

Temples, amulets and mini Indian hemp plantations were also destroyed during the operation.

The Executive Chairman of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, Uche Anya, stated that the demolition was part of the government’s determination to eradicate crime and criminality in the state.

“This government is determined to eradicate all forms of crime. So, people are being kidnapped and brought here, including the woman who was kidnapped near the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus.

“You can see the hardships we went through to get here today. So, it’s been a long time. But after today, this place will never exist again in the way you experienced it. That’s why we are here to send a strong signal and we are also warning property owners not to come and tell us that they are in South Africa, China or Germany and don’t know what’s going on. The moment your property or commercial entity is used for kidnapping or anything that involves physical violence or threats, including attempted murder, we will come after you and your property,” he said.

Anya warned property owners not to allow their properties to be used for kidnapping or other criminal activities, and stated that the government would go after them and their properties.

The operation is a significant step in the government’s efforts to combat kidnapping and other crimes in the state.
