Erdogan condemned the prohibition of the US visa to Palestinian officials, calling for an immediately reversal

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has greatly criticized Washington’s decision to block Palestinian authority officials from attending the UN General Assembly, demanding that the step be canceled without delay.

A US official revealed on Saturday that Palestinian Authority President Mahmud Abbas was among 80 officials who would be rejected by a visa to participate in the General Assembly this month, where France was the spearhead of efforts to encourage the recognition of the Palestinian state.

A step that has never happened before underlines the alignment of the Trump government with Israel, who continued its war against Hamas in Gaza and has long opposed the creation of a Palestinian state. Israeli leaders also tried to equalize the Palestinian authority, based in the West Bank, with their rival Hamas, a militant group that govern Gaza.

Speaking with Turkish journalists on flights back from China, after attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit, Erdogan described the US attitude as not in accordance with the UN mission.

“The US decision is not in line with Raison D’Etre from the United Nations,” Erdogan said, insisting, “We believe that the decision must be revised as soon as possible.”

Erdogan, who consistently positioned himself as a defender of the Palestinian struggle, had repeatedly accused the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government in a “genocide” in Gaza.
