EU warns Elon Musk to reduce harmful content on X ahead of Trump interview

The European Union has issued a stern warning to Elon Musk, urging him to curb the spread of harmful content on his social media platform, X, ahead of his live interview with former US President Donald Trump.

EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton reminded Musk of his legal obligations under the Digital Services Act to police and remove illegal content and disinformation.

“The larger the audience, the greater the responsibility,” Breton wrote in a letter posted on X, stressing the risks associated with spreading potentially harmful content in the EU. He cited Musk’s interview with Trump and inflammatory comments about far-right riots in the UK as examples of content that could incite violence, hatred and racism.

Breton warned that the EU was monitoring the situation closely and would take action if X was found to be in breach of the DSA.

“We monitor potential risks in the EU related to the spread of content that could incite violence, hatred and racism… My service and I will be highly vigilant for any evidence that suggests a violation of the DSA and will not hesitate to use our full toolkit, including by adopting temporary measures, if necessary to protect EU citizens from serious harm.”

Since acquiring the platform in 2022, Musk has been accused of turning X into a platform for far-right conspiracy theories. A new analysis reveals that Musk’s false or misleading claims about the US election have racked up nearly 1.2 billion views on X.
