Exclusive: Andersson walks out of talks to be new Super Eagles coach, says no to certain conditions

Talks to appoint 61-year-old Swede Janne Andersson as the new coach of the Nigerian senior national team have suffered a setback following his refusal to comply with certain conditions of the proposed contract, OwnGoalNigeria.com can exclusively reveal.

Andersson has been in talks with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) after being named the preferred choice to replace Finidi George, who stepped down six weeks ago following a poor showing in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The team will return to action with AFCON qualifiers on September 7 against Benin Republic before facing Rwanda three days later away from home; the NFF had hoped to have a coach in place before then.

That is highly unlikely after talks with the coach, who was in charge of Sweden for seven years before stepping down after failing to guide them to the 2022 World Cup and the recently concluded European Championship, failed to materialise.

We have learnt that he rejected some of the terms of the deal proposed by the NFF. Sources in Sweden reported that his agent had called off talks on the orders of the coach, who they say has lost interest in the job.

A senior member of the NFF board confirmed the latest development but said there is no cause for alarm as they are hopeful that talks will resume to resolve their differences, however, if a compromise is not reached, they will move on to the other options on the table.
