Exclusive: NFF grants indebted clubs additional time to settle their debts

The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, through the Player Status and Arbitration Committee, has approved an additional three-week grace period for indebted clubs to clear their debts and comply with the committee’s decisions, Sports247 reports.

We have exclusively learnt that the indebted clubs have been given until 27 September 2024 to comply with the decision of the Nigeria Football Federation’s Refereeing and Players Status Committee of 10, 11, 12 and 13/14 June 2024 or face the full consequences of their actions.

According to our source, who requested anonymity, he revealed that the indebted clubs must write an undertaking to this effect, declaring their commitment to pay all the debt to these creditors in letters addressed to the NFF and the NPFL.

The letter constituting an acceptance of the three-week grace period offer must be submitted prior to the close of business on September 13, 2024.

He confirmed that the committee has deposited an official letter addressed to all of them at the office of the NPFL Chief Operating Officer, headed by Davidson Owumi.

“I can confirm to you that Davidson Owumi has been informed of the new situation as only the club that wrote an undertaking declaring their commitment to honour their obligations to the indebted parties within the given timeframe will be given that opportunity, otherwise such indebted clubs will see the immediate consequences of their continued non-compliance,” our source says.

Recall that the Nigeria Football Federation’s Players Status and Arbitration Committee in its ruling issued on June 10, 11, 12 and 13/14, 2024 in a contractual dispute between clubs and players/coaches ordered the indebted clubs to cover all the debt within 45 days of the ruling, failing which the clubs will not be allowed to sign new players or transfer old players until the clubs comply with the judgment.

Instead of the clubs complying with the decisions, they defaulted and signed new players, transferred old players and also made the new signings play in their first week matches, defying the NFF committee decision and correspondence on the matter.
